This week, Mike and Ross are joined by Kommissioner Kev and his boy-toy Rhys! We further the legend of Racist Jason Sullivan and discover that one league member may be Richard Nixon. The Jets, the Sabres, Don Cherry and Mike Millbury all get the DO treatment - they like it rough, after all.
**There is an edit near the end where we veered off into a very tangential conversation. I felt the episode ran a little long, so I snipped it, but there's some good stuff there so I'll post it later this week as a bonus!
Great edits, Ross. It made it a lot more coherent as a show, I think. Sadly, we missed almost every reference to Jason being a racist (of which there were many). Ah well.
ReplyDeleteI really, really loved doing this and actually enjoyed listening to it as well (when normally I can't watch/listen to myself ever). Thanks again, gents. I honestly wanted to do it again tonight (the next day). Can't wait for next time. It was too bad some of Rhys's one-liners weren't picked up. He sat too far from the mic.
Also, I have two things to say that will piss Dale off (forgive me, Dale). First, I asked him if he would be interested in doing a short lecture on the history of sport in Canada for part of an episode (or an addendum or something), specifically addressing the issue of culture that comes up in this episode. He seemed almost interested, but thought no one would want to hear it. So if you do want to hear it, write a comment! We should all remember that he's teaching between 47 and 62 classes every semester, so no pressure on time, Dale. We all understand you're swamped. But if you get some time, I personally would love to hear that lecture.
Second (thing to piss Dale off) is that I want to do an All-McCartney edition of the podcast at some point in the far future. I don't know the logistics or listenership, but I'd have fun with it. And I think you'd all enjoy listening to us apologize to each other and say 'I love you' over and over.
Once again, I'm really having fun with this project, Ross. Thanks for suggesting it and getting it rolling and fighting through my reticence. And thanks for hosting us and producing as well.
You're right, those did make me angry...
ReplyDeleteI keed, I keed.
I would happily talk about the history of hockey as a cultural icon of industrial capitalism if that is something people wanted, but I would need a little time to prep. I need to do a little research before I could offer anything but bare generalizations.
Dale
Thanks, boys! The McCartney on McCartney edition will be highly anticipated as will any edumucation that Dale wants to offer up. Recording-wise, yeah, I should have boosted Rhys' volume a little more, he was very quiet - note for next time.
ReplyDeleteDale….Please do this if you find time. I would like to hear it.
ReplyDeleteDale and Kev….man vs man. Bro vs. Bro. Who can be nicer. I love it.
Rhys and I should do an episode too, as he could get me to be irritated in not time flat, and that might be funny to hear how defensive I would get. he knows my buttons.
Great work boys. Thanks for labelling me the 1%. I had a blast listening.
Just a quick two cents:
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode almost as much as the last one. I thought the editing on this one was seamless, Ross - maybe it was because I stayed up late to listen to it and was sleepy, but I didn't think there were any jarring shifts.
I do think, for whatever it is worth, that four people might be one too many. We did not get to hear much of what Rhys especially had to say, and I think partly it is just the nature of the beast - that many people makes for hard balancing work for Ross.
That said, Ross, you do a great job of steering the conversation. I like your transitions, and I like the way you intro topics to people. But I find you guys sometimes change topics before the one you are discussing has been fully resolved. Again, that might be the nature of the format, but I wonder if more structure to the podcast might help. Time limits on topics? Talking in the round, so everyone gets one or two shots to say their piece? I don't know, and maybe it will just get better with time, but in both episodes I noticed stuff got ditched.
Anyway, this is great stuff, and I really, sincerely, look forward to it already. Thanks for working on it, all of you.
Dale
Thanks, Dale! The input is constructive and useful. I think much of this will iron itself out, but structure and pacing will always have to be considered. We might be able to be more expansive on topics simply by taking fewer on each episode - on a weekly schedule, I'm sure we'll get around to all of them in time. And, of course, hockey is the focus but I personally want to keep trying to stretch ourselves to topics beyond hockey because I think that will help make it a unique experience for listeners.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I'm taking notes on everything, having never hosted anything before, so if anyone has comments, feel free to post them here or e-mail me OR I've even created an e-mail address for the podcast: offsidepod@gmail.com so that we might have some kind of dialogue with an audience beyond the group. Too soon? Maybe, but there already seems to be more traffic here on the site than what is just being generated internally. I hope that it grows and that we're on our way to making something everyone is proud of and entertained by!
